Chapter 743 - I Really Like You, Meili (1)
"You seem to be taking his whole parent thing seriously," Feng Tianyi commented as he joined He Lianchen at the patio next to their vast garden. "I'm quite impressed. I didn't know you are good with children."
"It's not that hard," He Lianchen replied. "I guess you can say it comes naturally just like how you treated your twins the first time you've seen them."
Feng Tianyi nodded and glanced towards where his wife was. He had never thought that returning here would eventually lead to him meeting his children and the love of his life.
Years ago, he was ready to cease living, not wanting to associate himself with anyone at all. Now, he always looked forward to each and every day to spend time with his loved ones and close friends.
"Hey, everyone's here. Should we go and start the party?" The two heard Song Fengyan calling after them with his young daughter sitting on his broad shoulder. Lan Yunru's hair had finally grown past her shoulders and it looked curlier since the last time Feng Tianyi saw the kid.
"Better go before my wife decides to threaten to send me into the doghouse again," Feng Tianyi said, wondering when he would have a decent rest for today. He'd been up before daybreak and had been busy preparing in the kitchen.
"Happy birthday!"
Birthday greetings came one after another, and the two little buns grinned widely when their birthday candles were lit up by their father.
There was a huge two-tiered cake on the dining table in front of their two little buns. The stars of the show were obviously in bliss that they couldn't contain their smiles as they received gifts from their aunts and uncles one by one.
Tang Moyu stood a few meters from her twins, watching them with a smile on her face. It wasn't every day for her to see her children as happy as this. Their friends from school came over to play with them and would be spending the night with them. Xiao Bao and Little Star were also ecstatic to see their grandmother, their uncles, and aunties attending their birthday celebration.
When they only had each other back in New York, Baobao and Little Star used to get into trouble with their classmates. One teacher even told her that the two just wanted more attention from her as their mother, which she couldn't afford at that time.
Even their birthdays were celebrated on her off days at work, and they would just be eating take-outs. She also just bought them the toys they wanted and nothing else, so this kind of celebration was also new to her twins.
When the candles were fully blown, pictures were taken, and dinner had been served and eaten, Tang Moyu felt truly happy for the first time since Tang Beixuan's death.
"Mommy, may I have a slice of cake, please?" Little Star ran towards her and tugged her hand to get her attention. Since she and Xiao Bao already blew their candles, they were excited to try the birthday cake made by their daddy.
"Okay, but don't eat too much. You just had dinner." Tang Moyu allowed her daughter to drag her back to the dining area where Feng Tianyi stood next to the cake, already cutting a slice for Xiao Bao.
"It's alright, Moyu. I can manage. Why don't you take a seat first with Li Meili?" her husband suggested, glancing towards Li Meili and Zhang Jiren, who seemed to be in an argument.
"What's wrong, Meili?" Tang Moyu asked her friend as she sat across the couple.
"Meili wants to eat cake too, but she already ate her portion for today." It was Zhang Jiren who answered instead of his wife, who was still upset that she didn't manage to convince him this time.
Tang Moyu eyed the two, seeing how her best friend grumbled something incoherent but didn't argue any further with Zhang Jiren. This was new to the empress. Li Meili was a person who didn't like to be restricted by anyone as she loved her freedom. So how did Zhang Jiren manage to tame her a little?
"You should listen to him, Meili. You know, you shouldn't eat too many sweets in your current condition," she reminded her best friend. Even if Li Meili agreed with her husband, it didn't mean she wouldn't try to get what she wanted through other means.
"Yes, Mother," Li Meili blew out. "I already conceded, didn't I?"
Really, Li Meili wasn't sure what changed between her best friend and Zhang Jiren. Tang Moyu seemed to tolerate her husband now, which was good in her opinion but she felt like she was missing something.
Did Tang Moyu threaten him? But Zhang Jiren wasn't a pushover either so what was the catch?
Li Meili decided to have a serious talk with her best friend later. While she trusted Tang Moyu, she didn't want to be left in the dark for too long. If there was something Tang Moyu knew about Zhang Jiren, shouldn't she, as his wife, need to know about it?
Meanwhile, Tang Moyu wasn't sure how she should interact with Zhang Jiren this time. Thinking about all the things she had said and acted since knowing him, up to the revelation that he was her twin brother, she had never treated him well.
"If you need to talk, then let me leave and join the twins for a moment." Li Meili stood up, eager to free herself from her husband and best friend.
"Meili, don't forget…" Tang Moyu reminded her, giving her a knowing look. There couldn't be any reason why Li Meili wanted to get away from her and Zhang Jiren's watch.
Li Meili tried to fight the urge to roll her eyes. Couldn't they give her a break? It wasn't like she was planning to take a bite behind their backs— well, she was, but they didn't need to know about it.
However, even before she could take another step, Li Meili stumbled forward, her hand grabbing and gripping Tang Moyu's shoulder for support as she felt a trickle down her leg. She then looked up and stared at her best friend with wide eyes.
"Moyu, I think my water just broke."
