Lost Chances 2
"Mother…" He wanted to say something, but the devil was also lost for words, just like the empress sitting next to him on the couch.
"Ahh, they are so cute and tiny!" Song Huifen commented once she saw the photos of the little buns when they were still newborns. They were obviously smaller than any singleton newborn babies.
Her heart tightened at the sight of the first photo, which was the black and gray sonogram of two little buns. Tang Moyu's neat handwriting noting the date on the lower right side of the photo.
Lady Song kept her emotions in check as she looked through the pictures, her throat thickening as she watched her grandchildren turn from small infants, cradled so tenderly by the aloof empress and her best friend, to a pair of smiling chubby toddlers playing with blocks and toys.
Tang Moyu hummed in agreement. It was chaotic when she gave birth to her little buns. It was a good thing that she and Li Meili had prepared their essentials and had readied the nursery back at home, but what she hadn't expected was Little Star's weak condition once she came out into the world.
"Ah, yes. They were so tiny. I still couldn't believe I was able to return home with the two of them given the scare Little Star had given me." She commented.
"Why is that?" Song Huifen asked curiously. Was there a complication when she gave birth? It only made her feel regret for not being there to help Tang Moyu and her grandbabies.
"Well, Baobao came out just fine, but Little Star didn't. Her heartbeat was really faint and the doctor thought we were going to lose her." Tang Moyu pursed her lips and sighed. "Her lungs didn't mature well either, so she needed to spend some time in an incubator and had to spend more days at the hospital until she was deemed safe to come home with us."
"Is she still sick up to this day? It must have been hard on you." Lady Song would definitely do her best to help the empress if one of her little buns were sick.
Tang Moyu smiled. She was starting to feel a little confused about why Lady Song seemed to be very interested in her little buns. While she knew that her twins could win other people with their charm, it was rare to meet someone who would dote on her little buns to this extent.
"Yes, she is still a little weak to this day. Thankfully, Baobao is a healthy boy, Lady Song. He rarely gets sick, so it wasn't too hard for me to cope." She said with all honesty. Up to this day, her daughter could easily launch her into a state of worried mess whenever she was sick.
Good thing, her little buns seemed to adapt well to the sudden change and didn't have a hard time accepting the change, not only to their environment but to the food and culture they weren't accustomed to as well.
Old videos of Xiao Bao and Little Star were being played on the widescreen TV. Feng Tianyi chuckled at the twins trying to compete who would be able to turn and roll on their stomachs first as Tang Moyu and Li Meili cheered after them.
Little Star was the first one who managed to roll, but she had cried almost immediately as exhaustion caught up with her, making Li Meili laugh at her while Xiao Bao struggled to finish the challenge their godmother had forced them to complete.
'We missed all of this?' Song Huifen thought, her fingers trailing over a picture of Tang Moyu looking at her young twins with a beautiful smile. Both the little buns were extending their arms, reaching for her. It was a good thing that Tang Moyu and Li Meili loved taking pictures and videos of the twins, at least she was able to see their recorded growth.
For the umpteenth time, she wished that they had found out sooner about their birth. However, she also knew that if they had, Feng Tianyi might not have easily accepted Tang Moyu in his life and might have treated her with indifference, just like he did the rest. Perhaps, he might even reject the little buns as his.
A loud cry startled her in her seat. The video playing on the screen had changed to a scene showing Xiao Bao and Little Star crying out at the same time, seated on the floor with their mother, who was looking disgruntled and tired at the same time.
"Meili, what should I do? They won't stop crying no matter how much I try." Tang Moyu said helplessly to Li Meili who was giggling behind her video camera.
"Moyu, they are already tired. Why don't you tuck them in their beds and let them fall asleep on their own?" Li Meili replied, adjusting the camera to focus on the crying little buns.
Tang Moyu had no other choice but to pick up her crying daughter. Little Star's face scrunched from too much crying as she whimpered.
"There we go... It's okay, darling… don't cry anymore." The empress cooed her daughter before tucking the girl into her crib, doing the same for her son shortly after.
The last image shown was Moyu and Meili leaving the nursery before the video ended on its own.
Feng Tianyi was smiling over the videos and photos he'd seen. It gave him a peek into what kind of life Moyu and the little buns had before meeting him. It must have been really hard for Moyu to do everything on her own. Meanwhile, Song Huifen's heart clenched as she lamented not being part of their lives sooner.
